The Girl the River Refused to Keep
Sum Buddee
"Funny thing about broken things..they still shine in moonlight."
✧ The Story of Sum Buddee ✧
Sum Buddee was never meant to survive. On a rain-soaked evening beneath the pale glow of Dalamud’s lingering scar in the sky, a Highlander woman named Mara and her Elezen husband, Lucien, discovered a wicker basket tangled in the reeds along the riverbanks of the Lavender Beds. The river should have carried the basket away long before dawn, yet somehow it remained caught among the lavender bushes, as if the Twelveswood itself refused to let it go.Inside was a tiny Moon Miqo’te infant wrapped in soaked violet cloth. The child did not cry. She simply stared upward with one vivid green eye while the other remained shut beneath a jagged wound across her face. Infection had already claimed the eye before they found her, turning it black and sightless. Whoever had abandoned her had done so in haste or cruelty.Mara wanted to march straight to Gridania’s authorities. Lucien argued no child deserved to become another forgotten orphan swallowed by the city. In the end, neither could leave her behind. They named her Sum Buddee, a joke Mara made to lighten the grimness of the night.“Poor thing needs a name,” Mara had laughed. “Could be sum buddee important someday.”The name stuck.Growing up in the Lavender Beds was peaceful on the surface, but Sum quickly learned she was different. Other children whispered about the blackened eye and the scar carved across her face. Some claimed she had been cursed by voidsent. Others believed the Twelve spared her for some unknowable purpose.Sum rarely spoke of it.Instead, she spent her youth wandering the forests surrounding Gridania, learning survival from Mara and etiquette from Lucien. From Mara she inherited stubbornness, practical skill, and the ability to throw a punch hard enough to humble most men twice her size. From Lucien she learned patience, reading, and a fascination with old stories and forgotten places.Yet there was always a quiet ache in her heart. She would sit by the same river where she had been found, staring into the current with her one emerald eye, wondering who she had been before that night. Wondering if anyone had ever wanted her at all.As she grew older, people began to notice something unsettling about Sum. Animals trusted her easily. The elementals of the Twelveswood never seemed hostile toward her. Sometimes she would dream of distant moons, silver forests, and voices calling her by another name she could never quite remember upon waking. The scar over her eye became part of her identity rather than a weakness. She wore it openly. Let people stare. Fear had teeth only if you fed it.By adulthood, Sum Buddee had become something difficult to define: too wild for city life, too gentle to become truly hardened, and too curious to stay in one place forever. Armed with little more than determination and the lessons of the parents who chose her, she left the Lavender Beds to carve her own path across Eorzea.Still, no matter how far she travels, she always returns to the river eventually.Somewhere in its waters lies the beginning of her story. And perhaps one day, the truth of why she was abandoned there in the first place.
